I recommend not using Sketchup. It's nice and intuitive, but the models are poorly optimized and Sketchup isn't compatible with most model formats AFAIK. Try taking Milkshape out for a spin. It costs twenty bucks, but there's a 30-day trial period. If you're really dedicated you can try learning to use Blender, which is free but hard to learn.
