If you want ultimate research invisibility, use an encrypted virtual machine partition and then store your stuff in a format such as .dds which can only be imported by image editing software (As far as I am aware).

You could set the virtual machine to switch off if a certain password is not entered into a command prompt window and package the batch file into an executable so it can't be edited.
