Author Topic: Volunteering  (Read 1114 times)

Under normal circumstances I probably wouldn't ever volunteer, however due to my school starting to require 10 hours of volunteer work a year I decided to start in the summer when I actually have time.

Today was the first day at the food pantry that I decided to volunteer at, aside from the fact that 75% of the people that came in spoke Spanish, it went pretty well.  I was given the largest job out of my entire family (My sister goes to the same school as I do so she needs the hours, and my parents decided it would be good to tag along)

My job consisted of greeting people, showing them how things worked, setting up the baskets that they get their stuff at, and taking this card thing that tells them how much to get.

Oh and I had to make sure people didn't steal anything.

It was a lot less boring then I thought it was going to be.  Also I discovered it's kind of hard to explain things to people when they don't understand English.

Have any of you volunteered before and how was it?

I was thinking military when I entered the topic

OP I am disappoint.

You don't know Spanish? What kind of American are you.

"Pueden tomar dos cosas... etc" does your school not teach Spanish? Where I'm at, we have to take at least one foreign language.

That means there are other options.

Example:  I took Italian.

It also doesn't mean that he did well in that subject.

Example:  I still don't know Italian.

I'm a native speaker of German and I had to learn English to live here and Spanish for school. Ironically, now I can't speak German very well anymore. Learning English is the biggest pain in the ass, I'm sure that most anyone can learn Spanish with a little bit of effort

I've taken Spanish for two years and not enough of it was useful for me.  I could use what I knew to help a little but it really wasn't significant.

They say that English is the hardest to learn.

Also I'm taking Spanish in Sophomore. Both classes, first one first 2 semesters.
So yay I can talk to Mexicans who won't speak english easier :D

Ah, well, in America, most of us don't give a stuff about foreign languages because the whole world has at least SOME English speaking areas.

Yeah, we're lazy.

Why is this thread now about speaking Spanish
Ive volunteered at a farm near my house and its super fun, I get to see all the animals and feed them c:

and yet I'm still required 3 years of a language

That was actually one of the options I could have picked, though I didn't think it would be very fun.

Bullstuff.  I was told that I was required of that myself and failed the final year of Italian.  I'm still in college, I still get federal grant money due to my grades and status, and I still take the classes I want.  NONE of them require language at all unless it's a language course.

The only time I have ever volunteered is because the five-oh.

Not because I just want to get out of volunteer hours, but we move almost every year, so I don't have to bother with volunteer hours.

Well yeah. Its mostly cleaning the animals pens and stuff but I love animals so it was fun for me, otherwise it would be just plain boring and tedious
