Author Topic: I'm starting to understand why I don't like school.  (Read 2784 times)

It's frustrating to have to be held back because other people are worse at something then me, especially in IT.
Computers are fantastic, I grew up with them and had pretty much learnt how to operate a keyboard and mouse when I was around 4 or 5. I started taking an interest in them at 6 or 7 when I got my first games console, a PS1.
When I was 10, I pretty much figured I wanted to make games for a living. I promptly attempt to teach myself some kind of programming language but, alas, fail.

That's why I was looking forward to IT at Secondry school so much. We couldn't do anything very advanced at Primary School, which was holding me back.

So here I am now. I am currently on the last term of Year 8. This year's IT has been so disappointing.
We haven't done any proper programming, just simple stuff with Scratch. While I was experimenting with complex variables, others were having trouble just launching the program. I even came up with a better code than my teacher, but he refused to use it. He doesn't know stuff about computers. I once told him I was learning Blender, and he replied "Well, it's good to learn a Programming language."
Also, He gets too worked up too quickly. A guy lifted a chair up with the legs in front and he flipped stuff. He screamed at the top of his voice about health and safety and then proceeded to give him a detention.

The lessons the IT department have come up with have been designed to be easy for kids who don't know much about computers, but this just stifles the creativity of the Young, Gifted and talented.

Our current topic is Animation. I've been looking forward to this ALL term. I thought "Awesome, we're going to learn how to use Flash!"
Our first lesson was learning what terms like "Frames" and "Animation" ment and our second lesson was, I'm not stuffting you, making loving animations in POWERPOINT.

I can't believe I'm even saying this, but IT is one of the worst lessons in my entire school.

He's 13.
Most schools only start with the basic basic basic basics in something like this because most kids can't understand jack stuff about programming.

I had to take an AP course this year just to do programming.
Glad i did tho cuz I got 103% in the course, including a 100% on the exam for it :D

Also the first time I used a computer was at 2 years old :cookieMonster:

the issue here is you are taking IT classes in anything but college.
of COURSE it will be dumbed down and handicapped, because its not real IT

dreamweaver is not loving html code
forget you web design

you know, i should take that course and ace it.

dreamweaver is not loving html code

yes it is.

if a person chooses to use just the wysiwyg, then they can. but it still is all done with html

I may add that our school uses Windows XP, an operating system which is 11 years out of date.

When I was 16 and my school taught two courses of Java and three courses of joint image editing with Photoshop and web design with Dreamweaver. The first course teaches you how to turn on a computer. That's about it. Windows 7 basic dual booting with some random Mac version on those weird ass screen only Mac computers. Half of the computers in my school are real PC's though. Not bad but could be better.

when they say you're going to learn how to "code html" and then they show you how to use dreamweaver, that is not learning html code.

yes, wysiwyg produces html, but it is not coding in pure html with motherloving notepad.

1) html is not code

2) you can use 100% html on dreamweaver if you wish. and you can learn html on dreamweaver even easier then just a notepad.

dreamweaver has wysiwyg/html showing both at all times. you or can choose to disable the view of one of em.

i have windows xp :(
Nothing wrong with, it's just old.

1) html is not code
yeah, i know, i was considering making this point myself to further add to the stupidity of the course.

yes, i know this too. my point is that they were advertising the course as if it focused on learning the code, but instead they had us working as if it was a word document

one of the first things we did was disable the code view for more room :(
