I don't think adding shadows and stuff is going to change the game too much. There are still going to be the same servers probably unless you wanted singleplayer.

Actually removing terrain and interior can help with improving other physics like vehicles. I'm really looking forward to improvements. Might enhance the ability to race, more possibility into making trains, and other neat stuff.
