Probably the latter. What are the chances that you would be holding the same exact mask Nenem wears in the future? Probably zero. You also have a sort of Datapad, which you normally wouldn't be able to read if it wasn't for this cool amulet. The only things you can recognize are a collection of the entire human genome sequence, and a map of the facility.

Inside the Deep Chamber is the Thaumic Core, a supercharged reactor which powers the entire structure's systems and devices. Currently half of the Ruins are not receiving power, so you decided to come down here and meddle with it for a bit and see if you can't get the whole place up and running again. Once that is done, you can activate the Automaton Fabricator and get some robotic buddies to help you keep the place from blowing up. Your guess is that they didn't have enough people to maintain the entire facility, and therefore they only powered the half they needed.

Throwing this mask away won't make you feel better. As far as you know, it is virtually indestructible. There are only a few ways of destroying it, but for the most part previous people in it's possession have just sent it through time and left it for someone else to deal with. Out of sight, out of mind you suppose.

As bad as it sounds, you have to keep this mask protected. You cannot alter the distant future, but you can prevent anyone else from using it's powers for nefarious purposes.
