You would lose all connectivity to the internet, period. This isn't strictly true, I think connections by IP addresses would still work.

The DNS-OK.US site relied on the government provided DNS servers to determine if a system was or was not infected.  Those servers were deactivated on July 9, 2012 in accordance with the expiration of the court order that authorized those servers.

It changed it to its own server, hence the name DNSChanger. I don't known the specifics of the virus, but there is a lot you could do by with this, like directing people to other sites where they would get infected with more viruses. If you removed the virus then went back into the control panel and changed your DNS back everything would work again. Unless it damaged some system files too, in which case you might have to do a repair install.

I'm so glad I defined auth.blockland.us in the hosts file, because Blockland servers like crashing if they can't reach the master server.

Why can't we have some sort of address caching to prevent issues like this, so long as the master server doesn't move like it did once?

Operating systems cache DNS queries, why reinvent the wheel? DNS has so many layers of redundancies making errors very rare, implementing address caching at the BL application level would be pointless.

In the case you didn't just notice, a portion (but note, not everyone) of people wasn't able to reach the forums. That obviously means OS caches didn't do the best job, so why would it do any better for servers?

I'm not aware of the situation, but it may be that they're done with the domain but Badspot is still using old name servers. No way I can tell if they forgot or are phasing it out.
