Mass shooting at Batman premiere [3 month old & 6 year old dead]

A man is in custody after allegedly shooting dead 14 people and wounding up to 50 others at a midnight screening of new Batman movie The Dark Knight Rises in the US city of Denver, Colorado.

The youngest victim is reported to be a 3-month-old baby.

Reports suggest a figure in a gas mask opened fire at the showing in a mall in the suburb of Aurora and set off a smoke or tear gas bomb.

Initial police estimates were of about 50 injured. Ten people died at the scene and four in hospital.

Children are believed to be among the victims of the shooting. The premiere attracted throngs of families and young people, many dressed in Batman costumes.

A witness told local media he saw people covered in blood after the shooting.

"A cop came walking through the door holding a little girl in his arms, and she wasn't moving."

Another witness said he heard explosions and what sounded like a fully automatic weapon.

"It was more than 50 or 60 shots. I was just worried about getting out of there."

Wendy Post, who was waiting to be reunited with her daughter at a local high school following the shooting, said her daughter told her the shooting erupted just minutes after the film began.

"She saw the exit door open and something was thrown across the screen, and then shooting started," she told local NBC affiliate 9News television. "It was chaos."


One man told the NBC affiliate that he was in the adjacent theatre watching another screening of the Batman movie when he heard gunshots and the theatre filled with thick, choking smoke.


He saw bullets holes in the wall, and some people in his theatre were wounded: "I heard moaning...they were in pain.'

White House Press Secretary Jay Carney said President Barack Obama was notified of the shooting by his Homeland Security Adviser, John Brennan.

A spokeswoman for Denver’s Swedish Medical Centre said three people had been admitted to that hospital with gunshot wounds and were in critical condition. Another hospital, Denver Health, had received six wounded, one of whom was in critical condition, spokeswoman Kalena Wilkinson said.

The suspect was found at the back of the theatre in a parking lot with a gas-mask, a rifle and a handgun, police spokesman Frank Fania said. "He did not resist, he did not put up a fight," he said.

The suspect was thought to be in his early 20s, Fania said. He was carrying a knife, a rifle, a handgun when arrested and one other gun was recovered from the theatre, he said. The gunman was also wearing a bulletproof vest.

Aurora Police Chief Dan Oates said there was no evidence of a second gunman. Dozens of police were at the scene, and authorities had evacuated the area while they checked for explosive devices.

Police say the suspect told them he had explosives at his apartment building. That building has been evacuated.

They reportedly stood up at first sight of Batman, then shot a baby point blank.  Also reportedly shot a pregnant women in the face and also shot her husband (Their nine year old son is also missing).  This is all stuff I'm hearing on twitter and stuff so nothing confirmed.

This is terrible though.  Damn crazy people.
