I don't think mentally ill allows you to be exempted from a life sentence. Just because I have autism doesn't mean I can walk into a supermarket and start yelling tribal hateful obscenities, and then be let off the hook because I have a mental illness.
You do realize people who plead insanity to murder charges are still locked up for life in an asylum? If they are considered guilty but mentally ill, they are sent to an aslyum. Even those who are acquitted from their crimes by reason of insanity still spend the same sentence in a psychiatric facility. Do me a favor and say, "I want a trial and all that junk, I just want capital punishment whichever btw some other people in this thread have said too" outloud and tell me if it makes any sense past the, "I just want capital punishment" part.
