Author Topic: A... Gold quarter? Is this actual currency?  (Read 1020 times)

My dad gave me a golden quarter yesterday. He has no idea where he got it, but he just found it in his pocket and put it away until I came over. It's pretty cool looking, and I'm not sure if it was actually minted officially or someone just did a good job at painting it...

^this one's very bad for some reason

New York on the back, minted 2001.

No, it's an actual quarter. Better pic:

Maybe it was one of those coins that were used in an experiment where you can change the color of the metal by heating it with certain chemicals.

Doesn't that fall under defacing currency?
stuff, better call the cops on him!

you can chemically turn any coins into a "gold" color.
the 2001 state quarter is just a standard quarter 8% nickel i think, rest copper
the color comes from cooking or dipping it in any number of household chemicals.

no its not gold plated. not that real gold plating has any value anyways.

We plated pennies with bronze once by melting the copper and zinc together, Im sure you can do something similar with quarters.

Peel off the side. It's a chocolate :3

the last currency to be made of gold were coins minted back in like early 1700
coins after 1964 no longer have silver in them. i hate how people call every dollar coin a "silver dollar" when thats just not true.

this is the ONLY current gold and silver coins the mint is making right now

when im doing my smelting i never forget with zinc lol. if you burn it even slightly to hot, it turns into a poisonous gas.
though its the easiest of the metals to separate, as all you gotta do is cook it to death.

Damn Bisjac did you get like straight As in chemistry or something

He's too smart!

We cannot let him leave here alive.

I have seen gold quarters cased in expensive glass cases go for a few hundred dollars.
Mind you they were veeeeeery old, but that's besides the point.
