If it had a border around the content area and the background was a white or beige colour I think it'd look much better.
It's always best to choose a colour which is easy on the eyes for a background, so I'd suggest a very light beige

You don't need an image for a background, there's nothing wrong with having a solid colour as the background so long as it's easy on the eyes and it works with the overall colour-scheme
