Author Topic: theoatmeal - how to suck at your religion  (Read 1466 times)

Even if religion didn't completely stop scientific development, it did slow it down, especially discoveries that contradicted the bible. You haven't forgotten about Nicolaus Copernicus and Galileo Galilei, have you?
Also, let's not forget about medicine; according to the church, interfering with God's creations was considered blasphemous.

You know what also slows down the advancement of science? A lack of unity which was eventually re-established by the Catholic Church in Europe

The Crusades the Church authorized also actually helped spark the start of the Renaissance

I'm not going to disagree with the statement that religious fervor interfered with some scientific research, and yeah, I'm well aware of basic history, but two examples also doesn't exactly make a convincing argument, especially considering the contribution religion made to early science. How is that possible? Well it's pretty easy when all of the major universities in the world at this point in time are also religious institutions, and scientific and historical literature is being hand transcribed by monks in Europe and Muslim scholars in the Middle East.

I don't think the issue with medicine wasn't religious either. The Middle Age understanding of medicine was based largely on philosophy of the Greeks and Romans and the rest of the gaps were filled in with lore and superstition. The reason medicine sucked is because germ theory didn't come around until the 16th century. If that's not a good enough answer for you I know a couple of people who took a course in the history of medicine and can probably get you a more thorough answer.

that about sums up my reasons for being athiest

that about sums up my reasons for being athiest
I prefer being agnostic
possibly the most neutral you can achieve

Nope. Secular Humanist.

I'm an apatheist. Not an official religion or anything, but "apathy" is the lack of caring.

I just don't care one way or the other. I lead a moral, good life. if there is a god, they wouldn't punish me for that. If there isn't it doesn't matter, lol

This for me but more along the lines of yeah there's probably a God but he doesn't seem too interested in us.
