Go to Real-time Shields, File System Shield, Expert Settings, Exclusions, add the Steam folder.

I have avast, and I decided to check out the Steam website, but nothing suspicious seemed to happen. Does it happen on a specific page on Steam?

What does the trial consist of? For 30 dollars I'd rather stick to avast.

if you mean AVG Free, it's perfectly fine and I have never had a virus or a false alert

Holy stuff, this happened to me too, I was scared that a virus might have planted itself in my steam directory.
But nope, it's just avast being a richard, it thinks vstdlib.dll is a virus.

Go with AVG. Avast can be a pain sometimes.
