Author Topic: Pretty sure 2 of my computer's RAM ports are broken. (update: not broken)  (Read 711 times)

Here's my problem:

I'm using 2 2 gb RAM cards currently. They're in like this:

*_*_ (* = card in, _ = no card in)

Whenever I move them into any other configuration, 1 of 2 things happens:

1: It doesn't recognize one of the cards.

2: It starts up normally, then bluescreens after a few minutes with a MEMORY_MANAGEMENT error.

Yes, all the RAM is compatible. I'm using windows 64-bit, so it should be able to handle more than 4 gigs.

I'm thinking the problem is either the RAM ports themselves or this is relating to my semi-broken 250w psu, which i'm replacing with a 450w psu this week.

Any help is appreciated.

Isn't that due to the way dual channel works?

That's exactly how it's supposed to be when you only have two ram cards.

That's exactly how it's supposed to be when you only have two ram cards.

welp, i feel stupid now.

the thing is, my psu is so forgeted it can only take 2 cards, so when i get my new one in on thursday that should be all good.

How did your PSU get damaged?

try just a single stick at a time?

ive seen issues before with 1 being bad, causing crashes, even though the other is fine. they dont wanna work together.

ive also had issues with shotty ram, that only bluescreens when i play games or watch a youtube vid for a few min.
whenever otherwise i would never notice.

also, i dont think ram really uses much power. i mean like 2watts each maybe lol
5 each if you are overclocking some ddr3? i dont even know because its never an issue that needs attention.

Pretty sure I overloaded it to break it. The computer is an HP, so it wouldn't suprise me if they already loaded it to the max.

Anyways, just put my new PSU in and I'll be getting 2 more 2 gb cards or ram tomorrow, so ill see if ican geti t to support the full 8 gb.
