Author Topic: My Computer Won't Start (Help Me Please)  (Read 594 times)

Heyo guys. The title pretty much says it all. I turn on my computer and it comes up with a black screen and white text. I am given two options to either start the start up repair thing or start windows normally. If I click the start up repair one, it just loads forever. However, if the start up repair actual loads up, it says that it cannot automatically fix the computer. It also says that I can do some system restore thing and other options. If I click on start windows normally, it just loads forever with the "Starting Windows..." text and the windows logo. I don't know what to do. Is there anyway to fix this? Thank you.

Have you tried system restore? (I ask because you said you got that far, but you never told us if you did it or not)

No I haven't. I am unaware of what it does, and I don't want to lose stuff on my computer that I have.

It won't touch that stuff, only system settings.

the first thing that comes to mind for me would be a hardware problem or something. my sister's motherboard had a problem and so it would load to the windows logo and then reboot itself, continuing this process until we turned it off.

have you moved your computer around recently?

System restore will not harm any of your data files. It will revert system files back to a specified date in an effort to render the computer usable. If by chance your computer won't start due to a driver error (just an example), doing a system restore could possibly fix your problem.

However there's always the chance that your issue is hardware related, in which case we need some more information. Do you hear any odd noises? Does your computer make a sequence of beeping noises on startup? Have you changed any parts in your computer lately? How old is your computer/harddrive?

If you have anything such as a memory card plugged in from a camera, take it out and try. I know I had this problem, my computer would freeze and not start up if it was in.

So do you think it is a possibility that System Restore would solve the problem?

Make sure the restore point is either yesterday, or some time in the day before the problem, as any further might reset your settings to something you don't want and/or don't know how to change back.

Yes. No guarantees, though. You won't lose any of your data in the process.

Alright, I will try that if the windows repair thing decides to launch. Thanks for the help so far guys.

yes.

but if you're really paranoid you can try burning a ubuntu live CD and backing up your data that way using any external storage device you can use.

if you got some kind of recovery DVD which you know has access to system restore (one example being the default windows 7 install dvd and the HP recovery partition/dvd, if you have the default, just try to use startup repair on the DVD and if that fails then system restore)
