Author Topic: Friend needs a somewhat decent computer for/under $400  (Read 886 times)

I've been talking to my friend recently, and he's been considering getting either a low end laptop, or a really terrible desktop and getting better components, then installing them. He's considering getting it because his current shared laptop is terrible, and it only has about 200 MB RAM. He's basically getting it to play Minecraft, as his parents don't trust any other games and think everything else is a "virus".

I'm honestly not too good at this stuff, and I told him I would consult you guys. I would appreciate it if you could help find a decent laptop for $400 (or less, but a decent laptop for $400 is unlikely), or help find a somewhat crappy desktop that is cheap enough for him to buy a 4 GB RAM chip and a 2.2 GHz (I think that's what he said, it's a little hard to remember, I recall him saying he could go a little bit lower) scratch that. He said a 1.5 GHz processor. Possibly an OK graphics card as well.

Thanks. >_>

i heard custom-built desktops could be pretty nicely priced.

Have him buy a Mac, then take out an insurance policy and get it involved in some sort of, "accident."
The claim would give him enough to fund 4 new PCs and a house.

He's not rich enough to buy a Mac.

He could probably buy the lowest model Mac Mini, which sucks ass

get your friend this.
Linked him to it. Waiting for his response. Thanks Jeep. :D

I don't think it would work, but nvidia gtx 520m graphics cards are $50 and are decent

He is honestly not able to play anything other than Minecraft.
Would you think it would run on that GPU in the computer linked?

If I was at a computer right now I would get a part list for him to build one.

There's totally not a Computer Megathread with suggested builds.

He can't BUILD the computer from groundup. He can really only upgrade it.
