Well since the other thread died and you cant bump it anymore, I present you with the new:


This is the place where you can come to learn interesting facts about Squid!
Every day I will be posting some interesting facts and a picture of a squid or baby squid!

You can also join in the squid thread by submitting your own picture or fact, and it may be featured on the front page!

Squid Fact #1
Some squid have bioluminescent organs that make them glow in the dark.


Squid Fact #2
Female squid lay thousands of eggs at a time at the bottom of the ocean.

Loligo pealei squids have eight arms and two tentacles, all of which are coated with suction-cups, lined with fangs composed of chitin. These tiny suckers, whose diameters are around 400 um, ultimately ensure that the half-meter-long squid will enjoy its next afternoon snack!

That first fact is horrible. You're talking about tentacles as if you're measuring mass as oppposed to numbers.

Squids have eight arms and two tentacles with which they can kill you. Because of this, they are also known as to have ten arms. I'm not sure what defines a tentacle as opposed to an arm, but you understand what I'm saying.

So in Sweden we call both squids and octopuses "inkfish". I'm sure some English-speakers do it as well. Somewhere.
I haven't seen the word "inkfish" on this forum. All I see is people posting "squids" because they don't know what the plural of "octopus" is.


Octopuses is correct according to my browser's built-in spell-check.
