as someone who has been around blockland for way to long. i can say that the maps have not aged very well.
they were hardly acceptable 6 years ago. but today their quality is a little embarrassing lol.

but on the more technical side. using these types of maps only hindered the possible updates badspot could have been giving us.
now we may see those updates come in the future :D

It was just released. And this isn't the full shadows and shaders update. Back when this was first announced kompressor said it will be off by default because of the optimization and bugs. Though they will continue to optimize it and work on it until it's ready to be enabled by default with no problems.
