he actually did use the shotgun, but I either closed in on him while he somehow missed, shot crit flares at him, or waited for afterburn to kill him

So I found one of the best teams in MvM that I've ever been put in earlier. We passed each wave like it was nothing, and the only wave we failed on was wave 6. We repeatedly tried to beat it, but everyone raged and left. :c

I'm curious as to why TF2 is hl2.exe, why didn't Valve make it tf2.exe or something? I think Portal is also hl2.exe

Did those games being made for the Orange Box have something to do with this? I don't see a reason why they wouldn't think to have changed the exe names until Left 4 Dead

L4D was the first real major update to the source engine in terms of mechanics, UI, etc.

TF2 and etc. orange box games all are still primarily made up of the episode 2 revision of the source engine I think, with TF2 having the most optimization and latest effort put into it in order to make it more easy to run since becoming F2P.

L4D was the first real major update to the source engine in terms of mechanics, UI, etc.

I wouldn't say mechanics or UI, but in the structure of it.  It moved from the GCF caching system to being based upon folders and VPK archives.
