Linux is a great operating system but it doesn't have the mainstream driver and software support it needs to actually be useful for day-to-day use. Yeah it's nice that there's a lot of free software, but most of the software is just people's personal projects and testbeds. Certain distros might work well for a netbook, but otherwise Linux should stay on servers where it's stability, security and multi-user architecture really shines.
