Doubt all five officers would open fire without some sort of reason. Still, when five people armed with handguns tell you to put your knife down, you put the loving knife down. Even if he wasn't about to pull a gun out and open fire (Which of course he wasn't because they would have informed the public by now), he was still being really loving stupid.
He was reported to be mentally ill. They could've easily handled this much differently.

Police or not, when six people are pointing guns at you and telling you to do something, you cooperate. It's not a difficult concept. I have no sympathy for this moron whatsoever.

I completely understand that this is true but at the same time cops need to learn to handle things in such a way that nobody dies and with minimal injury, they could have shot him once in the foot or continued to try to get him to drop the knife rather then loving filling him with bullets.
Cops are only supposed to use lethal force when their life is directly threatened. A man with a knife standing at a distance from 6 armed police officers is not life threatening.
