It isn't a double standard, if you've upheld a pretty good reputation and make one mistake you shouldn't get torn to bits. If your reputation is crap and you made yet another mistake then arguably you should.
This is similar to speeding tickets. My father was driving for 30 years before he got a speeding ticket. When he went to traffic court, he told the judge that he had been driving 30 years without any previous issue. He didn't have to pay the ticket, it was erased from his record, and his deductible and insurance rates didn't go up. He told me later that I was screwed if I got a speeding ticket, because I couldn't claim the same good reputation as he could.
