Author Topic: Rocky Landscape [Day 2 Photos Added!]  (Read 2797 times)

Well, one thing that I've seen throughout many landscape builds is that the creators randomly color landscapes.  Don't do this.  What I'd suggest is color in slightly less horizontal bands, like in real life.  But don't make it completely horizontal, paint it so it appears to be made in angled layers.

Not sure if that makes sense.

That would look stuff.

I'm more for randomness, however.. just small dots somewhere.. other than that I like it all grey.

that supports his point...?

Terrain isn't bad but doesn't have any sloping at the bottom so it looks bad. Its a bit late to fix, though, since you didn't build on a baseplate.

Keep in mind next time you start cliffs/mountains to not start directly on a flat baseplate or ground; shaping flat terrain is just as important as the mountain terrain.

Read up my guide if you haven't already, it explains what I'm talking about here better, with pictures. Flat terrain, under the Normal Brickscaping section.
It's on a baseplate, and yeah I'll be sure to look at that guide. It's very nice.

This is nice, but very uniform in angle.

Can I post a cubescape WIP here? It's all kinds of angles since it's a floating island.
Yeah, go ahead. I'd love some things to work off of. I'm still new to building terrain.

Ty :)

To be honest I'm no true expert but I've inspired a few other builders with my terrain.
Here are a few pictures,

Pictures aren't very artful and the second one screwed up badly due to crouching in midair without turning on autojet ._.

Katadeus, that should have its own topic. Those tree designs also look brilliant, too.

42/50, considering that it still has some work to be done. Style is well defined and executed. As a suggestion dont add too much cube fill detailing; focus on just using bricks to define the path and grass better.

The first cliff has been finished. I'll be making a cave in the cliff, and starting on a mountain tomorrow. Check out the photos from day 2!

Cliff looks really good imo, despite being rather
well, idk, i dont want to say simple, but whatever, you know what i mean

The way the cliff gets more directly vertical near the top is fantastic. This is very nice so far.

How much time have you invested in it?

Thanks a lot! I probably have 4 hours in it so far. It's 2.5k bricks.

Looks really nice today! I like it even more.

The flat cliff sides conflict with the unaligned base somewhat, but still works out.

:D

I'm actually working some storyline etc. into it; the whole island is a mysterious treasure hunt.
However, I'm wondering what you'd recommend for making better, more walkable paths through the rocks since it's all-default.

Ravencroft I'm very impressed at what you've added, and I have an idea that while inconvenient could give you the more gentle sloping at the base that people have been requesting. Duplicate the baseplates up about 32x cube height and make the baseplate transparent. Then, build more gently sloping terrain underneath and dupe it together afterward. Just a suggestion, as other than that it's just great.

Add brickscaping for paths, and add some more grass/dirt (probably already planned). Basically, just keep working on it.

be careful when you design buildings and props for this since the terrain style can easily be conflicted with. I suggest sticking with a simple medieval-wooden style with wood struts and white walls between struts, for buildings. Don't add too much detail overall.
