Author Topic: Designing a new automatic door opening system  (Read 2869 times)

So tomorrow I'm going to Radio Shack to buy:
-5/6 yards of wire (an extra yard for mistakes/breaks)
-Something to attach to my door
-1 or 2 gears
-A motor
-A switch
-About a day or so of work
With this I will make an automatic door opening system
the design is that from my desk I will flip a switch. In side my desk will be 4 AA batteries, this will produce a chage that will be send to the motor. The motor will turn, causing an object to either go forward or backward. This object will be attached to my door. This will pull my door open, from my desk. Anyone here tried something similar or is good at wiring and have tips for me?

Will 4 AA's be enough? For the kind of thing you're doing I'd get a motorcycle battery.....

you can buy a day of work at RadioShack?

Well. Think about this. Im going to need electricity for up to 10 seconds.
I mean that will last a bit of time. Especially because I have 451 AA batteries in the same place. (According to my battery dispenser I built c;)

Seems clunky and dangerous.

Opening a door should take about 3 seconds imo, but whatever floast your boast.

i said up to.
And it wont even open it all the way. It wil probably take about 3-5 seconds. Depending on how my dad will spend on a motor.
If I can get a good motor, Then I can probably open it faster than you can.

I guess you like building stuff for fun.
I wish I could have done that when I was a kid, hope it works.

As for gears, you have to actually think this through, how woud gears open a door, you'd need to put a quarter gear glued/bonded to the door, and a gear next to it, that was on the moter, mounted to the wall.
Probably won't take a day of work, but your door and wall will have stuff stuck to it.
