I shall tell ya! For i use PAINT.NET too! Either use the Eraser tool, or use the Magic Wand tool and fix the Tolerance if you want then click on a area and hit Delete on your keyboard, and viola!

I don't know how to explain Tolerance -.-

Tolerance: How much "similar" of the same RGB color to the part you click on is filled. For example, 0% means that only the exact color you clicked will be filled, selected, etc (good for pixel art) while 100% is every color - all of the image. Filling an image with white then using tolerance and fill transparent can be good for removing AA from an image.

That's not bad for a first, use the magic wand on the white part, and try deleting it.

Delete the white part. Not the image.

It's pretty good, try to make the image smoother by using the blur filter in Paint.Net in the appropriate time and place.
There are many other ways to make things smooth, try experimenting with layers and filters.

Example:
I used the feather plugin, doesn't come by default, and I've used median blur.
Also added a little bit of glow to get it to be brighter after all the blurring.
