how do you shade so well? i have problems shading with my finger

i love using mechanical pencils, normal pencils suck. idk if that makes a difference, but i outline where i'm going to shade on people and then i fill it in. i never use my finger to shade.

also for light areas i just run my eraser over it

I used to use my finger to rub in the graphite but then I realized it's messy as all hell good god
