And that's your experience, it depends on the device
My phone can idle for ~3 days on 3g, if I leave wifi on for 16 hours connected it goes flat
The reason for that is the wifi sharing service according to battery use. Between 70% and 85% of almost a full charge is to that one process.

Speaking from experience: Too hot phone = damaged battery

Some old Nokia phones used to explode because some had a decoy battery.

with very heavy network and simultaneous charging and use of the battery, it can cause the phone to heat up because no charge is settling. my DROIDX2 does this as well, just turn down your use of it when you're charging it.
