The POKEY is awesome, go away. It sounds like the 2600's TIA on steroids. Granted, it isn't nearly as good as the C64's legendary SID chip, or even the General Instruments (?) chip the NES uses, but it has a very unique sound. Maybe, though that doesn't make any sense since I was born just three years before you, in a time when the only console Atari produced was the Jaguar, and General MIDI and CD music were the greatest things ever.
