Author Topic: what kind of specs does a computer for a dedicated blockland server need?  (Read 3570 times)

Hey I just found my moms old computer (freaking dinosaur) and I was thinking of setting up a dedicated blockland server, the specs are 256 MB RAM, athlon XP processor, and a really crappy graphics card. I know I will have to upgrade these specs but which ones do I upgrade? I am thinking the RAM but should I upgrade the GPU as well? How much ram or whatever should I buy? Keep in mind that I wan't to make a server with 40K bricks, 32 players (maybe more). And a bunch of zombies running all over the place.

GPU is completely irrelevant to dedicated servers.

Sorry I have never hosted a dedicated server before. But does the CPU matter and how much ram do I need?

You should definitely upgrade the RAM, I'd say at least 1gb if not 2 depending on how busy of a server you plan on hosting.
As for CPU, I can't really say with the little info you provided.

The CPU is an 1.85 GHz AMD Athlon XP 2500+

I can host a server with at least 100,000 bricks and at least 28 players on just 512 mb of RAM.

The biggest concern for you will be the processor speed. I can host up to 28 players on a single core 2.8 ghz processor, so anything above 1.6 ghz should work fine.

Hopefully this gives you a good reference.

For ideal hosting me and my brother's personal servers we use 3.1 Ghz and 4 GB of RAM on a server computer.

NOEDIT : The specs I provided are meant for 4-6 intense servers with lots of bricks, projectiles everywhere and people. 1 intense server can work fine with what Greek2me said.

What's the internet speed and bandwidth?

this matters i'm pretty sure

lol@256mb of ram

Yeah you might want a little more RAM... Go for 512Mb at least.

From what you guys said, It sounds like my laptop would be great for a dedicated server :)
