Author Topic: Would it be possible to travel at the speed of light?  (Read 5108 times)

In a vacuum your skin wont be ripped apart because there's no friction

Uh, you don't get "pushed back" at any speed.

You certainly can't feel an aircraft going 400mph.

I think he means the acceleration would be so fast as to cause you to be "pushed" into your seat, IE when a jet angles downwards quickly, or when it angles upwards quickly.

Interstellar travel or whatever.

FTL drives probably aren't going to just speed up instantly. Even in a frictionless vacuum, there's inertia.

Hyperspeed or hypersonic?
Anyways yes, it might be possible for Light-Speed vehicles, and maybe even FLT drives, but no, I doubt you would actually slam your face through the back of your skull and into the wall behind you.

"I'm an expert on non-existent things because I played a videogame!"

No-one loving knows if it is possible. I'd assume it isn't because if you are going faster than light you are going faster than perceivable anything.

Have you seen documentaries about this? Scientists have an idea as to how but the structures to do it are huge and so complex they are literally impossible. Let alone how to supply the structure with enough energy to achieve it.

NASA is already making hyperspeed stuff, you know that right?

But, if they discovered the speed of light, then they pretty much already discovered that it's possible for something to travel at the speed of light, right?

Imagine going that fast, there'd probably be so much inertia, that you'd probably slam to the back of the spacecraft or whatever it is and probably smash your skull.
You don't quite understand acceleration or relativity. You're moving through space at something like 200 000 meters per second right now. If you were to accelerate to 99.9..9% the speed of light you wouldn't feel any different sitting in your chair then you do now.

No it's not. It would require an infinite amount of energy to get an object to travel that fast.

I never said I was an expert on anything, I'm just saying that I doubt that an FTL drive would instantly kill you for going the speed of light.

You are using that term like it is a real thing and not from a video game. Please stop, it doesn't make you sound smart.

FTL stands for Faster Than Light, I'm not implying it makes me look smart, I'm just using it because it's faster than typing "Faster Than Light" all the time.
I just use drive because it's familiar. What it's called doesn't change a damn thing, I'm still referring to stuff that makes things go at the speed of light or faster.

Also, implying the game FTL invented the term.

You would basically be vaporized before you got there

I'm not 'implying' anything. You wouldn't have ever said 'FTL drive' if you had never heard of the game. Admit it. You are only using the term because you were like "Wow! That sure would fit nicely into a conversation about speed of light travel! And make me sound smart too" You have no clue about how anything works in this subject.

Implying you know jack-stuff about when I heard about the phrase "FTL Drive"

You would basically be vaporized before you got there

Not so sure about this. It's your body as a whole going at the speed of light and not every atom in your body going at different speeds.

And like I said before. It's not possible. It would take an infinite amount of energy to achieve the speed of light.

go watch some sci-fi show like battlestar galactica, or play some game like halo or anything simiar.
you can even read it in books.

people have been calling them FTL drives for ages.
why, because it's easier
