But what is DDoS/DoS, I see people posting about this a lot and it confuses me?

DDoS - Distributed Denial of Service Attack
Computers behind this attack are often distributed around the world - or botnets

Dos - Denial of Service Attack
One computer and one internet connection to flood a server with packets.

The main difference is a DDoS will overload by thousands opposed to just one attacker in a DoS

Of course he could just want to IP ban him, seeing as if you IP ban a DDoSer he can't connect at all, and if he can't connect nothing bad can happen to him on that server... thus preventing an attack. Although he might be able to tell he's been IP banned and DDoS it anyway, it's much more likely he'll ignore you.

The OSI model displays how data is sent and (vice versa) received. If you block it through the Application layer, it still has to go through every other layer. Your network and NIC are still accepting the packets but the application is denying them. This will still slow down your network.

If the packets aren't blocked from a jump before your network then blocking an IP through software is meaningless

Ah. I was thinking something along those lines but I wasn't sure how BL servers worked specifically. BL seems to be quite unique when it comes to a lot of stuff.
