Author Topic: Cybercrime Prevention Act (R.A.10175) - Warning: contains illegal ranting.  (Read 2856 times)

There's a new law in philippines that gives people up to 12 years in jail for posting defamatory comments on facebook or twitter apparently.

Quoth the source I learned about it from;

The Philippines need media coverage around the world if they hope to have any chance at repealing this stuff.

To put things short, this bill is SOPA and ACTA’s demon spawn.

It was signed in at an inconvenient time, purposely for political reasons. This bill will restrict the voice of anyone who wishes to speak out against their politician, and is so vague and convoluted that 12-year jail time can be smacked on anyone for the most absurd reasons.

Holy loving stuff, apparently protesting against Romney is illegal in the philippines? Even mentioning him can put you behind bars? The forget were they smoking? And apparently it's aiming to spread to other countries, one of my chinese friends said it's in his country too. loving stuff.

Actually forget mentioning. Doing anything with a blog/post that says anything against their politican can get you behind bars. Again, quoth my source;

A lot of the blogs I and my friend follow are suddenly either down or password protected; they didn’t even allow 2 days for this law to pass, certainly not enough time for the public to react, and began acting on it within half a day (this morning), and already have many people in jail for up to 12 years.

This is the ultimate social justice act; not only is it ACTA/PIPA/SOPA combined, if you reblog, post, follow a blog that posts, +like, or otherwise interact with material that could potentially be offensive to someone, you’re immediately in some form of trouble with the law. I don’t know how severe, specifically, depending on what the ‘crime’ is.

Yeah so this douchebaggery is in the same category as Stop Online Piracy Act and Protect IP Act. Except CPA is special. Why, you ask? It's loving passed.

If you guys going to take arms for a country in need, here's some info. Once again, quoth the same goddamn source;

Also, according to this article, the Act was made to

Bullstuff, just find an IP logger, track the friend down and jail him. Is it that hard?

OH WAIT THERE'S MORE

However it also includes a blanket provision that puts the country's criminal libel law into force in cyberspace, except that the penalties for Internet defamation are much tougher compared with old media.

It also allows authorities to collect data from personal user accounts on social media and listen in on voice/video applications, such as Skype, without a warrant.
Y'see, from the lower bit, they're loving tracking their social media accounts and probably even eavesdrop on Skype conversations.

Teenagers unwarily retweeting or re-posting libellous material on social media could bear the full force of the law, according to Noemi Dado, a prominent Manila blogger who edits a citizen media site called Blog Watch.

"Not everyone is an expert on what constitutes libel. Imagine a mother like me, or teenagers and kids who love to rant. It really hits our freedoms," Dado told AFP.

Compounding the concerns, those teenagers or anyone else who posts a libellous comment faces a maximum prison term of 12 years and a fine of one million pesos ($24,000).

Meanwhile, newspaper editors and other trained professionals in traditional media face prison terms of just four years and fines of 6,000 pesos.
forget me they're full on fining innocent teenagers for reblogging rants. People aren't allowed to spill their soul out after a bad day at work. If someone does, the poor soul has to deal with a SWAT team and a bounty. A bit extreme for a rant. Tabloid reporters are at a good bit of risk too.

Argh the article is really long, I could be illegally ranting for hours. I'll just give you the goddamn article again. I've posted just a third or quarter of it.

Source I used for three quotes

Wow, just wow. That stuff's forgeted up.

Somebody needs to tell the people, who made CPA to calm their tits down...

This is only in the phillipines though, right?

Doesn't the FBI also monitor Skype conversations?

Skype wasn't made in America?

yeah but I doubt american politicians would pass it like this. it might be recommended but the public would quickly say forget no.

The petition site is blocked by my school. Oh well, 3G time.

What if it came to America?

I think we'd all be in jail :D

So now religious morals are being law? I hope I'm wrong, because theocracies have their goals set on mental slavery, not fair government.

Seriously what the forget? How forgeted up do you have to be to limit peoples freedom that much?

You must be a congressman to go such extremes

You are not a congressman and as such you cannot comprehend such actions

Should be renamed to Surpression Of Speech Act.
