Author Topic: Google Chrome Virus Toolbar?  (Read 1271 times)

I've had similar toolbars install with other software before. About a month ago I had a toolbar install with cheat engine. Trying to disable it within Chrome did nothing because the toolbar had its own program files folder. Trying to uninstall an extension won't touch software's installed files because they exist outside the Chrome directory. All I had to do was uninstall the program and it was completely gone. I have Malwarebytes and I made sure to scan, and nothing was detected.

These toolbar developers make money from jamming ads into the toolbar, hence the "clean up your PC" link, and the search bar, which is likely an ad ridden search engine. If they put some semi-useful links into the toolbar like Facebook and Skype, computer illiterate people are more likely to keep the toolbar. They have no interest in revolutionizing the toolbar industry, it's just easy money.

Bu all means, OP should scan his computer, but I'm not so quick to cry virus at everything that happens to a PC.
That doesn't necessarily mean it can't be malware, As there are plenty of known malicious toolbars around, Afterall would you enjoy some program downloading a toolbar without you're consent

The "Clean up your PC" link is almost definitely a way to install even more viruses on to the computer.  You've never seen those "your computer is infected, now running a scan!" scams?  They're viruses.

You don't need to be quick to call something a virus, but when it doesn't uninstall and it's out to possess personal data, is's a virus.  God, why the forget are you crying about this?

I have legitimate programs with 'pc cleaner' links included in the interface. All they do is take you to a page to buy some software. Trying to sell you something != virus.

but when it doesn't uninstall

Already be explained.

it's out to possess personal data

Assumption.

And as far as we're concerned, that isn't the case.

Based on your own biased information, it was explained.  It was certainly not the answer to OP's question.  As far as we're concerned, he can't uninstall it because it's a virus, because that's all of the info we've been given by OP.
Assumption.
Which is also what you're doing.  Why are you bothered by an assumption when you're making one yourself?

can't uninstall it because it's a virus

Guess that means all of the Dell bloatware that I can't remove completely are viruses!!

No, but usually when it's basic software like this, and it literally CANNOT be removed without a cleanup, it's malware/viruses.

you guys completely dismiss my post.

I had this yesterday, I uninstalled it and it worked for me

And as far as we're concerned, that isn't the case.

Based on what? Companies are going to have an easier time making money selling crappy but legal software than they are installing illegal viruses on computers and being quickly stopped by anti-virus scanners.

he can't uninstall it because it's a virus

Based on what? Like I said, he has to uninstall it from his system, not just Chrome. Trying to uninstall an extension that was packaged with software won't remove the software's installed files. They are in different folder. This is NOT an assumption, I have had this happen to me with a toolbar before.

Why are you bothered by an assumption when you're making one yourself?

Because I'm going on past experience with toolbars and the ads I've seen embedded into programs. You're going on nothing more than "it's obviously a virus".

See above.

I'm going off of blatant evidence shown from the screenshot and my experiences.  Toolbars can be viruses, and toolbars can simply be scammy nonsense.  They're both assumptions, quit trying to attack the other.

Is it by chance Incredibar?

lol'd @ blatant evidence
