Buying 256MB for $21?  Hell no.  Even if it's semi-antique RAM, you're wasting your time with 256MB of RAM.  If you're intent on keeping this laptop, going all the way to its 2GB maximum is the best bet.

It's only 256MB, too low to realistically make a difference.

Idk what you mean by this.  You mean with this specific type for this laptop (200-pin DDR2 SODIMM)?  No I think there were like 4GB kits available too.  However, Gateway lists that this laptop has a maximum RAM limit of 2GB so putting more would be useless (or cause problems, never really hit a motherboard's RAM limit.)
