I need courage to get past Route Kbrown town in HL2

Ok, so i'm playing HL2 for the first time, and now i'm in this tunnel, filled with these... things... They are like splotches of gook sticked onto roofs with long tounges extending down to the floor. I saw one before I went into the tunnel, it ate an entire bird. And i'm scared to go through the tunnel because there are three of them. Here is a picture of one.
