So I guess they like found a new planet so close to a star that it turned the insides into diamond. I guess that means diamonds could be worthless in a number of CENTURIES. Its 40 light years away, would this planet be possible to get to?

Diamonds are already pretty common, but the companies limit it to make them rare.

Diamonds cartels just jack the price up on them. They are worthless as jewelry, but make great tips for drills and other pieces of hardware.

Also, that is still half a lifetime even at the speed of light away. That would (at the moment) be very unrealistic.

Diamonds ought to be relatively common, you'd think.
Carbon isn't an exceptionally rare element in the universe (as far as I know).
And all it takes is a lot of heat and pressure to form diamonds from carbon atoms.

And if you have a carbon rich planet form, then diamonds are a given.
