Ok, the disc drive works because I can run Slacko Linux on it. This means the Sata controller on the motherboard is ok, and I only bricked the hard drive.

The hunt for a replacement drive ensues...

Breaking News.

After running Puppy Linux I have discovered that the hard drive is still fully functional and I can access it. This means that it is just windows having an issue and I can hopefully resolve it and keep all my files.
