Author Topic: RTB save file submissions -OR- make more public builds and designs  (Read 9861 times)

Deleted my loving on-topic posts.

General use TCP server on the same port as the server. Complete with custom protocols including HTTP.

There should be a "featured" build list every week chosen by moderators. It could work like the new start game menu where it has the preview, the name, description, and so on, except the builds will rotate every 3-5 seconds like steam.
This way builds can have a week to shine and get their download count up.

Yeah I think I mentioned this a couple pages back.

But what will the featured builds be chosen for? It is just the moderators decision?

How to make this balanced?

I think yeah, moderators can just decide amongst themselves. I've not really thought about that bit much but I'd trust the moderators to actually promote good things not just their own builds or something.

Sure there can be quality control, I just don't think builds should have to be approved before they can be available for download. Trying to find out if anyone has any strong feelings about that one.

Perhaps if a new submission meets a threshold of positive ratings within the period that it's considered "new" then it would be floated to the top for a while much like new add-ons appear at the top of views in the mod manager?

I think it'd be best to see if this does become an issue before a strike system is implemented. Moderators would be able to prevent people uploading things so they'd still have the control they need to do a good job and keep things running smoothly.

I'd have to do some experimenting to see how feasible it would be to do automated previews for submissions. There would definitely be edge cases where the system does a crap job so maybe taking pictures from various angles and allowing the user to pick the best one would be the best way to go about it. I'll have to do some tests at some point and see how well it works. But yeah I agree - people tend to take really bad pictures or not take any pictures at all. Both are really unhelpful when the preview is the most important part of a submission. I'll be fixing the screenshot uploader to accept all resolutions so maybe people will be less lazy about screenshots.
I like the automatic pictures with giving the creator a choice in the best ones.

This is probably a relatively minor concern, but how will moderators be chosen? They would really only need to be mature, right? It's not like with add-ons, when you need to be able to script to test them well.

That's right. I guess I'd pick a few initially and it'd be up to them to pick new moderators. I'd definitely like to have about 15-20 people moderating though.

I'd love to help if you want.

It's not even finished yet, lets not turn this into loads of people posting to be moderators/pming me about it.

Do you aim to make this the last RTB feature?, possibly alongside the GUI feature?

Pretty sure he mentioned something about a clan manager system or something like that.

Nah there will always be new features to add to RTB. Whether or not I actually want to go ahead with the clan manager I'm not sure about but my focus is definitely on this save system stuff next, along with some big chat system improvements too. The way I see it, the save system is a valuable investment of time because if Blockland gets greenlit then potentially most of RTB's functionality could become obsolete - but Steam definitely won't be able to offer anything that caters so specifically to Blockland's requirements in terms of a save gallery.

Oh though this might not be exactly on topic about the save manager system, I'm thinking that features should be separate add-ons. Perhaps the normal RTB has ONLY the friend manager and server control and such. Then you can download expansions, such as the Add-On manager, this Save File manager, and more.

And why wouldn't you want all of them?

This is quickly turning into the RTB 5 development thread, isn't it?

Yeah ... I'm only really interested in discussing what Eksi's brought up so I'm not gonna reply to other things.

Why not simplify the process and just disribute saves with the addon list? People can move props as they want on their servers. (Atleast with the dulplicator they can)

I really love the ideas and features being worked toward, but having a simple working base to work off of might be more beneficial at this time.
I'd love to see this as envisioned. Take your time.

I'm not too sure what you mean by simplifying the process by distributing the saves with the add-on list. The add-on list would be automatically generated based on the contents of the save file you submit and people could then see the list of add-ons required by a save when they download it.

I think this is one of those things where there are certain features that just have to be in place before it could go public. Mainly the moderation control since this would be an open system with no submission screening. There are a lot of other things like automated previews and things which could be cut from the initial release to make sure this comes out a bit sooner though.
