This is the basic set of grammar rules in ASL.

Notice how some of the sentences appear to be fragments. It's because they are.

It's not the same thing as spoken English because the words aren't meant to hold phonetic meaning. His excuse is that he's known this grammar system for decades, and suddenly making dramatic changes to your writing using grammar that is incomprehensible to people who only know ASL is incredibly difficult. It's a completely valid excuse. Leave the guy alone.
