That is amazingly heartwarming.

Was this some type of weird punishment, or did the kid really want his train in space?

I skippsed spikked skipped through it and didn't see a toy train in darkness and stars.
I am disappoint.

The eyes creeped me out the first time I watched it, but I didn't really notice it and just felt creeped out by something about the train.  Then watched it again and found it he animated the eyes and mouth. It was creepy

Yeah, the grin it had on it's face didnt really suit what it was going through
