Blockland is practically its own engine now, although it started as a simple lego torque engine with all its modifications, it would be a complete waste of time and we are already on the right path.

Also, there's hundreds of games out there with microphone support and they turn out just fine.

Torque has all the code for the game, including gameplay mechanics, physics engine, etc.
OpenGL makes it so we can see the game.

Shadows are a GPU/GPU API (OpenGL in this case) function. Badspot adds code to the engine to interact with OpenGL, which interacts with the GPU. That's why it will never work with a GPU that doesn't support it.
