"Mason, Private Investigator Mason"

It is 1924... a gloomy rainy night in Chicago.

Private Investigator Mason was finishing up a final report on one of his cases. He sat in the room, tired, listening to the monotonous sound of the rain pounding on his office window. He glanced around, the room was dimly lit, only allowing him to see his work and the shadows of his cluttered room. He took a sip from his coffee mug, the coffee was cold from sitting out so long. There was no time to drink seeing as he had urgent work to complete. His white button up shirt was wrinkled, same with his dark grey pants. Groaning in fatigue, he got up from his chair to go outside to have a smoke. He did not smoke much, but when he did, you would know that he was under a painful amount of stress. As he stepped out, a cold, frigid breeze gave him goose bumps on his skin. In his retrospect, he wish he brought a coat. He pulled out a box of cigarettes, he opened the box that reeked of tobacco. There was one cigarette left, he plucked it out and put it on his lips. Before he could get the lighter, he heard a large explosive crack nearby. It wasn't thunder, it was a gunshot. He could deduce that it was rifle, just by telling by the sound. It was close, and down the street. He follows the direction of the shot and walks to the back alley of the apartment to his left. There is a fire escape, a door, a dumpster, and a flickering light that illuminates the door.

What should he do?
