Author Topic: What if you disconnected from your computer for a year?  (Read 957 times)

Hey guys, I'd like your input on a topic I'm writing about for a college essay that I think you all would have valuable insight on. I'm at a bit of a writer's block stage, and I'm trying to get this essay done this weekend.

The topic that I decided on was this: What if I were to disconnect completely from technology for a year?

It's pretty simple, just...what if you unplugged from it all?

I realize that I'm going to get some stuffty joke input, but I would really love it if I got even a couple responses from people who actually thought this concept over. Just share your ideas, I'd love to hear your input.

Go!

You'd probably be thinking about how many messages you're getting over that time.

Then you'd think "omg i'll have so many conversations"

I wouldn't be alive without internet for so long

i would be extremely lonely and bored and spend a lot of time crying

I'd probably be a little worried about where others think I've gone off to.

that'd be kind of depressing lol

luckily most of my friends irl :3

I went on a retreat to the Dominican Republic over the summer for ~1 month, no technology at all.

Truthfully for the first 3 - 4 days I was distraught and had no idea what to do, constantly had headaches and such
After that, it was normal, I was living in the condition I usually do, just without technology

When I returned I just sat and looked at it all, like, "What do I do? ;-;"

Well, I've been pretty close.
One time 7 months without any internet, second time I was reduced to using a computer that couldn't play any games for almost an entire year.

It was hellishly boring, let me tell you

My internal organs are surgically attached to this forum.

On a more serious note, I'd become extremely bored, wouldn't be able to finish my computer course and would become depressed from a lack of educational opportunities.

for the first 3 - 4 days I was distraught and had no idea what to do
pfshahaha wtf

honestly wouldnt matter if i didnt have my computer, i would be perfectly fine without it.

I believe people are over-exaggerating their dependence on their computer. I obviously can't accurately speak on their behalf, but I agree with you for the most part. I seriously doubt that people would go into withdrawal because they weren't on the internet for a while.

I'd like people to consider this idea little bit deeper, because I'm just as tied to the internet as all of you are, I'm sure, and I feel that time away from technology would be a positive experience.

i do pretty much nothing irl
i go to church and to grocery stores and thats about it

¥ola probably wasn't over exaggerating though.
A year or so back we went without power for a week, and the first few days without dependence on on modern technology wasn't really that positive. Yet over time you accustom to it, and don't require the internet for entertainment, as you find other mediums at which to keep yourself entertained.

Stage 1)Depression
Stage 2)Acceptance
Stage 3) Procrastination
Stage 4)Find out life is meaningless, you kill yourself.

For a while you think about people and conversations that you could/want to be having, but after a short while it all seems to fall away until you don't even want technology back.
A life free from this technological era is a better life.
