Author Topic: Whats up with my internet?  (Read 1681 times)

So earlier today my mom got an email from our ISP saying that we've used 300gbs out of the 250gbs that we were allowed to use, or something. We were confused at first so my mom called the ISP asking whats up. They said that we are only allowed to use around 250gbs of bandwidth a month and that if we continue to use so much internet, that they will shut it off. Looking into it we noticed that the billing cycle just started last week.

So can someone explain to me how in the hell we managed to use 300gbs of bandwidth in a week?

Make the password something other than "Password"

Do you have any family members that might torrent? If not, it could either be something simple like streaming too much Netflix to having some form of malware on your computer. If you have insecure wifi, your neighbors could also be stealing it.

I think my brother torrents a few games every now and then, but I dont think that would cause this.

I'm up to 291 gigabytes since the beginning of November.

I should also mention I'm the only one using the internet.

I... Should probably tell my brother to stop torrenting stuff.

That's when you know it's time to invest in a seedbox.

oh loving gee willikers, I never even saw this coming!

Why? I have no problems seeding on my regular connection, nor do I mind.

See if your ISP has a day-to-day calculator thing for your usage.

If so, check what day it spiked or if it's a constant.

If it spiked, talk to everyone in your family about hwat they did that day on the computer.

If none of them did anything intensive, (torrenting, downloading large files, downloading suspiscious things) then check your router page for recently connected devices and see if there's anything on there that's odd or isn't from your family. If so, change hte password and call your ISP to tell them your bandwidth was being stolen.

If there isn't anyhthing odd, about any of it, it's likely you have some malware. Perform an intense/deep scan for malware, adware, viruses etc.

If you subscribe to a good one not only do your torrents download faster, you're more immune from your ISP if there are any troubles. At the same time, you also upload better and use less of your own bandwidth. If you don't care then I suppose it doesn't really matter. To get a good ratio on some private trackers, they're almost necessary.
