Author Topic: What happened to my sister's laptop?  (Read 2728 times)

So a few minuets ago my sister was using her laptop, and she told me that she was looking through photos on google images, and she found one she liked so she clicked on it, and It took her the a website where the picture is from, and she downloaded the picture to her laptop. All of a sudden the screen went black, and there was a measage on the screen saying something about the site being secret, and the FBI locked her laptop until she pays 200$, and her webcam turned on, and started recording, so she covered the camera with her hand, then told me and my mom.

My Sister does have Anti-Virus, but I don't know what this could be, or if it's true.

Any Idea's?

this is a virus, it tries to trick you into sending in money, the fbi has nothing to do with it
im not sure how you can remove it

Ransomware.

What anti-virus is it?

Ransomware. Shouldn't happen if you have a decent anti-virus. Which one was she using?
Anyways, to fix it, boot into Safe Mode with Networking, then download, install MalwareBytes, and run a scan with it.

That is literally the scariest stuff ever omfg I am legitimately scared

lol wtf

It's actually a really easy thing to do. The person makes a SJDB (Silent Java Drive-By) which then downloads a photo which has a virus binded to it, and that locks the victim's computer and records their webcam to the hacker.

All this can be acquired for free. Totally illegal though.

Unfortunately, Some ransomware completely disable the ability to access the desktop through safe mode.

Haha, my friend was saying the same thing happened to him, today. Actually, that's not funny at all.

Maybe she secretly does online shows for a living and when it was time to perform you HAPPENED to be there so she had to cover up the cam. That could be it, but it is just a theory.

DOES NO ONE REALLY THINK THIS IS SOME OF THE CREEPIEST stuff EVER OMG Im actually crying holy forget

That is literally the most brilliant virus. It's right up there with screamer viruses.
Anyway, try cleaning it out from another computer, either by network or by removing the hard drive and putting it through an HDD's case and cords. Done right, there should be no detrimental effects to the other computer.

Oh, by the way, there are viruses that can spread by LAN and by FTP that basically give the hacker complete control of your computer and let them see what is on your webcam and what's on your screen.

BE SCARED

Is there any way to fix this?

My sister said her anti-virus ran out like last week, but she said it was something like avg protector.
