Did steam just lose connection for everyone?

I don't know what happened, but I think steam may have been updating something..  Or doing something with the servers.  Because I was using it, then everything just went offline.  Now, this happens every once and a while, yet it was taking a long time to reconnect.  And when it finally did, almost everyone was offline.

Now people are slowly starting to reconnect, did this happen to anyone else?
