Every consumer PC I own has broken temperature sensors. Two Dell laptops, two Dell towers, two HP towers, and a Gateway tower. All of them have temperature sensors, but give bogus data consistently. Of course I'm going to assume you have a standard consumer PC.

If you don't know what went in it chances are it's not a custom build.
