Author Topic: Advice for building.  (Read 1228 times)

So a few of you might remember my old topic on my building skill, well... it hasn't gotten any better.
So I'm hoping to get a little more advice on a couple things.
-Interior
-Detail
-Medieval structures
That kind of thing. So if you can help, it would be appreciated.

Medieval structures: Get yourself a copy of this (or later/earlier versions) at your local library and skim through the pictures on English Gothic/Medieval Architecture.

If you're curious you can also find greek, byzantine, egyptian, prehistoric, early christian, and styles following medieval to present day.

For detail it really depends on what kind of it, and for what type of build. Give something more specific, like TDM/DM detail or general building-to-impress-people detail.

JVS doors are great. JVS windows are bad. Roof tiles are a good tool. also try and pan your build before you build it.

Personally I LOVE wood floors, and modern contemporary homes.

Also don't use a lot of greyscale

You're library is the best place for acrchitectural styling Especially for mideval things

Here is my tip to you OP.

Look through the old threads of the gallery.  Look at builds there that you like, and try to recreate them.  If there is a save to go along with it, then first recreate it, then check your recreation with the original.  After doing this several times, you will begin to learn some semi-basic/advanced techniques used by the good builders - ie, lack of spam, good color pairing, symmetry where it is needed, cleanliness, etc.  After you get to this point, look at some of the suggestions and requests boards requesting things built - they don't have the be recent, the point in doing this is to get experience in creating your own builds from your imagination.  After you have mastered this, go into the gallery again or the general discussion boards and look at what people have made - look for the longer threads with more positive comments.  Use these threads as your opponents.  Create the same exact thing that others are making, and strive to rival them.  Don't copy their specific plans/ideas, but instead put a positive, creative, original spin on your build.  Focus on the bad parts of others' builds, then compare them to your builds.  If you see something in your build you don't like, change it.  Still don't like it, change it again.  Change it until you love it.

That's how I came to be an advance builder and eventer, by following those exact steps.  The only issue with it is that you may develop accute OCD, from the repetitive recorrecting of you mess-ups.

Happy building.

To get a hand on building style, try copying pictures.

Also, never build the exterior before the interior in case there's not enough room for the interior.
Always make walls 3 bricks thick to get different wall textures/colors on each side and to center doors.

Remember that ultimately, like music, the structures you create (and by extension: the methods you build them with) are a reflection of yourself; your personal taste, your style. There is no correct way to build. If you think that something should be done one way: do it. If you aren't sure: try it. Don't let anyone's personal opinions be forced upon you. Build the way you want to.

Improving your skill is a similar topic. You need to find a way that works for you. Gen. Hothauser, brian498, and Conan have some good method suggestions. A suggestion from me is building cooperatively; the benefits being on-the-go criticism and motivation. Build with a friend, friends, or join a clan. Observe the ways that they build, how they do it, find what you like, and reimagine it. Find something that works for you.

At least he was actually contributing.

Im not the best builder, so I either build a big build in low detail or a small build in better detail. I hate building Towns, Staircases, and Bridges. the more you build though, the better
