what's the difference between SA2 and SA2B anyway

never mind, didn't realize both were on steam

what's the difference between SA2 and SA2B anyway

SA2B has the multiplayer and chao karate

This is NOT a gameplay review. This is a review about the fact that the game is a port. This is reviewing how well the port was done. The gameplay works fine.

PROS:
- it's the sonic game you expected
- looks, sounds and feels better than the original
- only $10 for the core game

CONS:
- local multiplayer, don't buy SA2:Battle DLC if you don't have people to play with
- no FoV slider (sonic/shadow are very close to the screen, this is frustrating)
- textures look gross, low res
- awful keyboard controls, control scheme has colored boxes where keys should be
- no volume slider in game *anywhere*
- no proper options menu in game
- no mouse driven menus

SUMMARY: it's a port to the PC. don't expect miracles. it's nice for what it is, but it could be a lot better.

REVIEW:

As soon as you launch the game, you're greeted with this:
Pretty basic, just resolution settings.

If you click the second tab you will see this for control schemes.
You can also use a keyboard, with both QWERTY and AZERTY layouts.
(the third tab is to enable/disable sending brown townytics to SEGA, by the way. just a check box and some text.)

you CANNOT change control scheme in game. in game options are as follows (clockwise, starting at the selected icon)

- Change Vibration Setting
- Change Stereo / Mono
YOU CANNOT ADJUST GAME VOLUME FROM THIS MENU.
IN FACT, YOU *CANNOT ADJUST GAME VOLUME AT ALL*

- Select Language for Voice-over
- Change menu screen theme
- Clear the 2P battle record
- Save or load save data (file select)

note that you can access this menu from in-game however the only choices are vibration if you have a controller, and stereo/mono
also, the options music plays on top of the in-game music. this is VERY annoying and there is no way to mute it as far as I can tell.

UPON LAUNCHING THE GAME,

opening cinematic is in 4:3 with black bars put around the side .. except at the very top I can see parts of the cutscene so for some reason they're purposely blocking out part of it. you can't seem to be able to skip this the first time. (this is directly after clicking start on the options menu)

EDIT: you *CAN* skip this, however if you selected controller as input device, keyboard will NOT work to skip it and you have to press start on your controller (or equivalent)

main splash screen is in proper widescreen. if you select controller as input device you CANNOT NAVIGATE MENUS WITH KEYBOARD AT ALL.

note that THERE ARE NO MOUSE DRIVEN MENUS. I repeat, THE MOUSE DOES NOTHING.

MULTIPLAYER: multiplayer appears to be local only.

LEADERBOARDS:
They're broken, and there are already cheaters. Note how you can't see the person's name in any case.

CONTROLS (handling)
Handles great with a controller, however the joystick is very sensitive. I don't see settings for a dead zone but again it could just be my particular controller.

Keyboard controls: WASD for movement (by default) and .. red square for .. wait .. what

if you forget what the default bindings were like I did ... you're out of luck

in terms of handling, it's decent. controller is better. get a controller. menus are very awkward with the keyboard, as whatever your jump button is seems to be accept, however enter sometimes handles menus too?

just don't play it with a keyboard, alright?

turns out red square was 'K'
beats me.

Wait, this game is nostalgic for you guys?
Well, it was a good game, but I still have my copy so.. I can play it whenever.
Neat that its on Steam though. How does it control on a keyboard.

How does it control on a keyboard.

I'll be getting to that in a bit. Probably worse than a controller.

i tried playing the Sonic Adventure with a keyboard
needless to say it drove me nuts. i want to get myself an xbox (or some decent console) controller as well

Is "local" 2 player same computer or LAN? Same computer, right?

correct. same computer.

Do you think someone could hack LAN play into the game somehow someday?

.. hopefully :(

anyway my "review" is done, feel free to read it/disagree with me guys :D

Could you go through the files, see if it is in some common format which someone might mod?

this is what was expected by me, honestly
just an HD port
