Author Topic: Updating my Graphics Card  (Read 811 times)

Hi guys,
I want to update my graphics card although I don't know which one to purchase.
I currently have "Nyvidia GeForce 6150SE nForce 430" installed

I am completely new to purchasing VideoCards so please bare with me.  My graphics score is rated at 3.2 currently, and I can't even run minimum graphics on Blockland.

Heres some information about my computer below (If you need more, feel free to ask and I will get it for you)

Thanks!

Why not update the processor also?
Chances are, your motherboard and power supply will not be able to support a new gpu

so I will only be able to update my graphics card if I get a new motherboard, gpu, and power supply? :/

Oh god, don't buy a new motherboard.  Just buy a new computer.

You can reuse some of the parts here to save money, like the 3g RAM.

Hm...  This computer isn't that old.  Maybe cheap, but I don't really want to replace the whole thing ;~;

It's like this

>You want a new video card
>In order to get anything worthwhile, you'd need to upgrade your motherboard to something with a modern slot (I'm assuming your card is either onboard or AGP, you'd want at least PCIe 2.0)
>New motherboard will have a different CPU socket and thus require new CPU
>New motherboard will require new RAM
>I'm assuming your current Hard drive and optical drives are IDE, new motherboard may not have IDE connections
>Will require new power supply to accommodate increased power requirement.
So you pretty much need a whole new computer.

RAM is cheap as forget though, and it's likely his is extremely old and wouldn't be supported by a new mobo

actually, the sempron 150 is an am3-socket processor
so he could theroretically swap it out for a phenom II x4.
BUT, the motherboard has to support a 125 watt processor, and I doubt it does. and the power supply for your $100 computer is probably only like 200 watts.
so,
buy a new computer

Trying to give the only feasible advice.  Besides, it's a newer computer he said.  The ram may still be DDR2 or DDR3.  In which case, he can get a cheap, decent machine that can utilize the old DDR2 stuff.

This. You might as well buy a new computer if you even want to consider upgrading.

This is exactly what I did.

I had a pre-built stuffty HP Compaq, bought a new video card + psu

Next thing I know I'm bottlenecking the forget out of the GPU with my CPU, end up grabbing a new CPU only to find the incompatibility with my mobo, so I buy a new mobo.

New mobo isn't compatible with my old RAM, go buy some DDR3, put it all together in my stuffty tower, the damn thing overheats.

Buy a new case, and viola, a new computer, just because I wanted a new GPU

Ya, bro just go on Newegg and look at parts to buy for a new computer, and then they will build a computer for you. We will help you.

You should do what everyone says and get a new computer. And I agree you should.

Yeah I agree that a new computer would be very nice.  Although my parents got me this one last year and I don't feel like asking them for parts for a new one..  Ya know?

(X-mas)
